Burkina Faso’s 20 Mega Projects: A Nation Reimagined Under Traoré’s Vision

In a bold stride towards self-reliance and modernization, Burkina Faso is undertaking 20 mega development projects that are redefining its economic landscape and international relations. Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, these initiatives span sectors from renewable energy to digital transformation, signaling a new era for the West African nation.


1. Renewable Energy Expansion

Burkina Faso is investing heavily in solar power to address energy deficits and promote sustainability. Key projects include:

  • Kodeni Solar Power Station: A 38MW facility in Bobo-Dioulasso, operational since December 2023, providing 73 GWh annually.

  • Zina Solar Power Station: A 26.6MW plant in the Boucle du Mouhoun Region, commissioned in May 2024.

  • Pâ Solar Power Station: A 30MW facility in Balé Province, operational since December 2023. 

  • Donsin Solar Power Station: A 25MW project under construction near Ouagadougou, expected to be operational by 2026. 


2. Mining Sector Reforms

To maximize national revenue from its rich mineral resources, Burkina Faso is nationalizing more industrial mines. The state-owned company SOPAMIB has taken control of several gold mines, aiming to increase gold production and establish a national reserve. 

3. Urban Mobility and Infrastructure

4. Agricultural Development

The revitalization of Ouagadougou's 2,000-hectare green belt aims to combat desertification, reduce urban temperatures, and promote urban agriculture.


8. International Partnerships

Burkina Faso is diversifying its international partnerships, engaging with countries like Iran to enhance cooperation in trade, mining, and agriculture, reflecting a shift from traditional Western alliances.
